A Legacy Rooted in Truth and Service
Founded in 1853 by visionary St. Louis civic leaders, WashU was named in honor of George Washington to reflect its commitment to nonsectarian, non‑political education. From its earliest days offering evening classes for the local community, the university has evolved into a global leader in research, education, and public service. Today, nine schools serve over 16,000 students from every USA state and more than 110 countries, fostering diverse perspectives and academic ambition.
